Teacher Training - Rowan University, Teaching Department, Glassboro NJ

Dr. Jane Sullivan, Professor Emeritus and Dr. Midge Madden, Assistant Professor have been working with Escuela Integrada since 2002. They are experts in literacy and two (2) to three (3) times a year they come down and conduct a weeklong institute for all Escuela Integrada teachers. Dr. Sullivan and Dr. Madden develope these institutes in conjunction with the Escuela Integrada leadership team to specifically taylor them to Escuela Integrada's particular faculty needs.

This is the "best of the best" and research proven most effective way of helping teachers grow both in knowledge of content and confidence in their developing expertise. Also, because the Guatemalan educational system puts little to no emphasis on strong reading skills and even less emphasis on writing skills Dr. Sullivan and Dr. Madden are working with Escuela Integrada in the development of an actual curriculum so that these subject matters are approached in a systematic way that is consistent across all grade levels.

As part of the New Jersey Reading Association's International Project, we have been able to build up a library so that the children in our project are taught with books and then are able to read on a daily basis. A library, something very common in your average US school, is a luxury here in Guatemala. This partnership has made a tremendous difference in the quality of education that we are able to give our students. Dr. Janice Betts has joined this team in 2006 and we look forward to many additional years of successful curriculum and staff development.

Escuela Integrada will be participating and sharing our vision and experiences in the 5th International Literacy Conference in Guatemala City in February 2007.

The creation and maintenance of Escuela Integrada’s library has also been achieved through ongoing support from Save the Children Denmark, and more specifically the Danish Family Mejding.
