Escuela Integrada - Antigua
Escuela Integrada schools through the support of LACES, are dedicated to providing
access to education to some of the 67% of Guatemalan children ages 7-14 who do not
attend school. We accomplish this by:
- Providing a quality, balanced EDUCATION to the children and adolescents
who are the poorest and most vulnerable of Guatemalan society. Our students are
the kids who normally have to work to survive. By providing them a quality education,
your support helps open the door to a brighter future for all these kids.
- Providing a quality FEEDING PROGRAM
to the children and adolescents in the Antigua school. This program uses hundreds
of pounds of tomatoes, onions, potatoes, oats, pasta, and many other food types.
Vitamins are provided daily to all Escuela Integrada students, including those in
Chuchuca.
- Providing free MEDICAL CARE through
our in-house medical clinic in Antigua. Once more, Dr. Sandra Acajabon, a pediatrician,
will be providing her services to our kids and families for three days every week.
- Providing PSYCHOLOGICAL COUNSELING
to the many abused, battered children who participate in the Escuela Integrada program.
Our in-house counseling clinic is headed by Lilian Flores Cardona, a degreed child
psychologist. This help to our students is vital. Lilian assists in all aspects
of Escuela Integrada planning.
- Providing a LEGAL and RELIABLE ACCOUNTING system which guarantees
the proper use of donations. The Escuela Integrada program is a legal, properly
functioning non-profit organization which is fully registered under Guatemalan and
U.S. law.
- Providing SPECIAL TEACHER TRAINING
through advanced education, special workshops, and special training programs. Escuela
Integrada has a 4 year history of working with educational interest groups such
as the International Reading Association,
“Universal Education”, “Save the Children”, the Guatemalan “Ministry of Education”,
and the “Center for Educational Research and Development for Latin America”.
Escuela Integrada schools truly reach the underprivileged because we do not charge
enrollment fees, monthly tuition fees, we do not require uniforms and we provide
95% of school supplies free of charge. We have also placed our current two projects
in strategic locations. The Antigua project serves the area ghettos and reaches
children and young people that would not have access to education without our projects.
We have a satellite middle school in a remote Mayan village that has not ever had
a middle school in the area. In addition, we have partnered with two rural grade
and middle schools to provide them with needed supplies and books.
All donations for Escuela Integrada are handled by:

The typical Guatemalan school schedule only allows time for the four (4) main subjects
of; Science, Math, Social Studies and Language. Escuela Integrada strives
to provide an excellent, holistic education. We have extended our school day from
8:00 am to 2:45pm. So, as a result we are able to focus on the four main subjects
in the morning and add additional areas of study for the afternoon such as: art,
music, gym, bible as well as reinforcement of reading and writing skills.
Field trips and recreational activities are also included in our programs.
Escuela Integrada started with 110 students in 2004, and in 2008 we expect to have
over 200 students enrolled in our grade school program.
The parents of prospective students are interviewed and a basic socio-economic background
study is done to insure that their financial need is valid.
Feeding Program Cost per Student = $50.00 per month
Cost per Student = $500.00 per year
A Grade School Teacher makes $275.00 per month
Student Profiles: In there own words.
Meet one of our students and read their own words of appreciation for a chance to
be educated. Even at this age they seem to fully understand how important
an education really is.
Middle School - Antigua
In urban Guatemala 27.1% of 7-14 year olds start secondary education.
Middle School in Guatemala includes grades seventh (7th), eighth (8th) and ninth
(9th). As difficult as it is to attain a grade school education, a middle school
education is even more expensive. Institutes are usually located only within urban
centers. There are limited seats available in less expensive government schools
and entrance exams are used to raffle these positions off.
Due to the limited seats available, many students who could pay the fees are left
without the possibility of continuing their education. Students with little or no
money have no chance at all. Further: students who have been poorly prepared in
grade school are at a huge disadvantage. In Escuela Integrada, students study free.
They are interviewed and a basic socio-economic study is done to insure that the
students entering our program have true financial need. Each student signs a contract
in which they are required to have good behavior, give their best effort, and maintain
a grade average of 75% or higher. Students who fail to maintain the desired grade
point average are at risk of losing their scholarship. Enrollment for the middle
school in Antigua is expected to be ninety (90) students for the 2007 school year.
Cost per Student per year $750.00
A Middle School Teacher makes $300.00 per month
