El Rodeo - Serving through the Public School System
What is El Rodeo?
El Rodeo is a rural community about a 40 minute drive south of Antigua, Guatemala.
There is one public school in this rural community that serves several thousand
area children. Over 400 are enrolled at any given time from grades kindergarten
through 9th grade. Many more children in this area need and could go to school if
the public school in El Rodeo was supported with building additions, building repairs,
feeding program, supplies and books.
Why are you working in El Rodeo?
Escuela Integrada desires to create a network of schools that serve the poor and
underserved regions in Guatemala. In some cases it is necessary to start a new school
from scratch. But this is not always the case. If a community already has a school
structure it is better to work within that structure and strengthen the local leadership.
This is what we have chosen to do in El Rodeo. We have chosen to come along side
a struggling Guatemala public school and offer support in the ways that we are able
to improve the opportunity for education there.
What exactly have you done there?
Escuela Integrada has responded to the extensive needs in education here by building
on much needed classrooms, repairing the roof and by building a kitchen that serves
the several hundred children that attend there. School supplies are shared from
our main location in Antigua and clothes and shoes have also been handed out from
the containers of goods that have been received from the States.
We have also been
invited several times to share the love of Jesus through Vacation Bible School programs provided by chruches that have sent missions teams that have
worked with us.
